Renergy Foods AG Completes Phase II of its BioDome Construction Project

Tom Colclough, President of Renergy Foods AG (“Renergy”), today announced the completion of Phase II of the company’s 30 by 10 meter BioDome project at its subsidiary’s farm site in Surrey, British Columbia. The BioDome’s ETFE pneumatic pillows have now been installed on the aluminum structure and have successfully been inflated with the specialized dehumidification fan system.
The BioDome’s hi-tech ETFE “skin” provides a superior climate-controlled greenhouse environment that will provide ideal growing conditions. The ETFE pneumatic pillows will allow the transmission of more natural sunlight and utilize energy more efficiently than either glass or polyethylene used in traditional greenhouse structures. In addition, the ETFE pneumatic pillows will provide better insulation and snow loading capabilities.
Renergy’s subsidiary NuAgri, Inc. is currently raising capital to progress to Phase III of the BioDome construction project, which includes manufacturing plastic injection molds and components for the NuStax Growing System (vertical growing cabinets and columns), and installing the control, nutrient, air management, and supplemental lighting systems.
Phase IV will operationalize a polyculture aimed at providing a diverse selection of fruit, herbs, and vegetable varieties.

Tom Colclough, President of Renergy Foods AG (“Renergy”), today announced the completion of Phase I of the company’s 30 by 10 meter BioDome project at its subsidiary’s farm site in Surrey, British Columbia. The BioDome’s supporting aluminum structure is now in place, anchored to the structure’s concrete floor with its integrated thermal insulation and hydronic pipes that provide fourteen separate heating zones to control climate within the BioDome.
Renergy will immediately progress to Phase II, which will see the mounting of custom-made extruded aluminum keder tracks to the BioDome’s supporting structure. The keder tracks in turn will then support ETFE pillows, which form the BioDome’s hi-tech “skin”. Using a proprietary process, these ETFE pillows are currently being fabricated onsite at a custom-built ETFE fabrication facility.
Renergy’s prototype BioDome will serve as a demonstration project called the “MicroDome”. Even during its concept stage, the MicroDome has garnered significant attention from prospective customers, such as commercial growers and farmers operating on small acreages. In addition, a full-scale BioDome version has been designed for future use.

Prototype BioDome will Showcase Renergy’s Advanced Horticultural Growing Technologies

RENERGY Foods Canada, Inc. (“Renergy”) announced today that construction of its prototype BioDome is now underway at the company’s farm site in Surrey, British Columbia. While the project experienced some weather-related delays, it benefits greatly from various late-stage cost-saving design optimizations.

Construction work completed to date includes the placement of thermal insulation and hydronic pipes followed by the pouring of the dome’s concrete floor. The site is now ready for the erection of the BioDome’s supporting aluminum structure. In tandem, ETFE pillows that will clad the BioDome will be manufactured onsite in a custom-built facility. Due to the proprietary nature of this technology, no photos will be made available.

RENERGY Announces Prototype ETFE Pillow

Growers will Benefit from Specialized ETFE Cladding Technology
(Vancouver, BC) – November 9, 2011.
RENERGY Foods AG announced today that it has successfully manufactured and tested several pneumatic ETFE pillows. The prototype ETFE pillows and frames provide proof of concept for the first demonstration biodome, the 30 by 10 meter “MicroDome.”
A total of 26 ETFE pillows will be required to complete the Renergy MicroDome. The pneumatic pillows will serve as the structure’s cladding and will be attached to the biodome’s aluminum frame.
ETFE is a well-studied and widely-used architectural polymer (plastic) with numerous remarkable properties that make it the material of choice to clad Renergy biodomes.
To manufacture the cladding, and using ETFE welding equipment, individual sheets of ETFE are fashioned into air-filled pillows. Growers using Renergy biodomes will see a number of operational and environmental benefits that can be directly attributed to this remarkable material:
- Exceptional solar gain
- A very high heat retention capacity
- Transmission of 95% of all light frequencies
- Possibility of using imprinted shade-on-demand features for climate control
- Full material recyclability
- Fire safety advantages
On balance, growers will see a reduction in construction, operational, and maintenance costs.
Two examples of well-known structures that incorporate ETFE pillows are the “Eden Project” in Cornwall, UK, and the “Water Cube” in the Beijing National Aquatic Centre (2008 Olympic Games).
Each Renergy biodome pillow consists of two or three layers of ETFE foil welded inside a frame. Pillows are inflated with air, typically at a pressure between 200 and 600 pascals. To maintain air pressure, gauges and electronic switches monitor and automatically activate low power electrical fans connected to the pillows (click for pictures).
Renergy is in the process of setting up a manufacturing facility – the first of its kind in North America – dedicated specifically to the production of ETFE pillows. For this purpose, the company has acquired specialized ETFE welding equipment, as well as extremely durable ETFE foil.
More About ETFE
ETFE (Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) is a polymer with remarkable properties. The material is not a petrochemical derivate and its manufacturing process is water-based, requiring no solvents or additives. ETFE has 95% transmission of all light frequencies. The material weighs a mere 1% of glass, enabling considerable savings on the structure required to support the cladding. The non-stick characteristics of ETFE make it low maintenance and virtually self-cleaning. With a wide service temperature range of between -200° to +150° C, it has extremely good resistance to tearing, weathering, solvents, and chemicals. It is extremely flexible and can stretch 150% to 200% before breakage. Because it is able to absorb shock loading without risk of fracture, breakage, or structural overload and collapse, it is an ideal material where there is a risk of explosion. ETFE has low flammability and is self-extinguishing. In its pillow configuration, it has a U-value of approximately 1.95 W/m2K, which is considerably better than triple glazing.

Vertical Growing Cabinets

The Cabinet is considered a manufacturing prototype because it uses plastic parts made from temporary molds. The purpose is to identify design improvements before investing in the plastic injection molds required for commercialization.

Tom Colclough, the president of RENERGY FOODS AG, today announced that on 12 January 2011 the Company filed a new Canadian patent application in the Canadian Patent Office.
The patent application covers 48 claims of a plant growing system designed to increase plant density and yields. The patent includes descriptions of a building structure that provides an artificial growing environment, growing walls arranged in parallel rows, and Aisles between the growing walls to provide access to as many as fifty layers of plants.
The Company expects to receive an official filing receipt that sets out the application serial number and confirming the filing date from the Canadian Patent Office within the next several months. In approximately eighteen months after the Canadian filing date, the patent application should be published by the Canadian Patent Office and posted to the Canadian Patent Office website.
In the next year, Renergy Foods AG anticipates filing additional patent applications to protect its intellectual property.
